Periodontal Disease Q & A

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of your gums. It occurs when plaque –– a thin film of food particles, saliva, and bacteria –– gets trapped beneath your gum line. As plaque builds up, it hardens and becomes tartar. Over time, tartar causes your gums to separate from your teeth.

When left untreated, periodontal disease causes your teeth to become loose and unstable. It also irritates your gums, resulting in pain and increased sensitivity.

Who is at risk of periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease affects people of all races, ages, and genders. Several factors increase your risk, though, including:

  • Using tobacco
  • Having diabetes
  • Being pregnant
  • Taking certain medications, including oral contraceptives and steroids
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Crooked teeth

You’re also more likely to experience periodontal disease if you have a medical condition that compromises your immune system, such as lupus or HIV.

How is periodontal disease diagnosed?

To diagnose periodontal disease, Dr. Castanaro conducts a thorough oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks about your symptoms and lifestyle, including the types of foods you eat, how often you brush and floss, and if you smoke or drink alcohol.

Afterward, Dr. Castanaro uses a small ruler to check for inflammation and measure the pockets around each tooth. If necessary, he might also order digital X-rays to check for bone loss.

How is periodontal disease treated?

Dr. Castanaro offers several types of treatment for periodontal disease, including:

Dental surgery

During dental surgery, Dr. Castanaro uses the Solea® dental laser to vaporize inflamed gum tissue around your teeth. Next, he performs a deep cleaning, carefully removing tartar, plaque, and harmful bacteria from beneath your gum line. Dental surgery with the Solea dental laser is quick, pain-free, and requires no anesthesia.

Dental implants

If your periodontal disease causes the loss of one or more permanent teeth, you might benefit from dental implants. Dental implants are small metal posts that serve as replacement tooth roots. Dr. Castanaro affixes them to your jawbone during a quick in-office surgery. Dental implants can support dental crowns, dental bridges, or implant-supported dentures.

Bone grafting

If you experience bone deterioration due to periodontal disease, you might benefit from bone grafting. During bone grafting, Dr. Castanaro implants synthetic bone material into your jaw. The synthetic material encourages the production of new, healthy tissue, restoring your jaw to its near-original condition.

Crown lengthening

If you have excess gum tissue or a “gummy” smile, you might benefit from crown lengthening. During crown lengthening, Dr. Castanaro carefully removes your extra gum tissue, revealing a larger portion of your tooth. This can address cosmetic concerns or it can expose cavities beneath your gum line.
